Stevenson is a small town, boasting maybe 1200+ people in southern Washington just east of Portland on the Washington side.

Who would have dreamed they had a future hero in their mists?

Gloria Powell is a 53-year resident of this small town. Through her tenacity and honest will, she brought down a corrupt auditor in their county using the Open Public Records Act of Washington State.

Howell is the winner of the 2011 American Society of News Editors Local Heroes Award. She was nominated for the award by WCOG after receiving a Key Award in July 2010 for her use the Public Records Act to discover willful and unlawful violation by the Skamana County Auditor.

Howell has always been active and involved in community organization as a volunteer and organizer. She served on the Stevenson/Carson School Board as a member for 15 years and has long been a representative and advocate for youth in the county.

This video (2hour 1min) is the WCOG Forum held in Stevenson May 18, 2011 featuring her story.
